A long time ago, when I was about the age in this picture, I began to draw. Mostly on things that I was not supposed to, but that is another story. I continued to draw through childhood and became even more inspired after meeting three artists working diligently at their easels out of doors on a warm summer day.
Drawing was one thing I could do well through my early school years, and so I naturally found my path in high school to be in commercial art. After that, the lure of drawing and painting at the Artists Workshop was where I wanted to be. Then, of course, I thought the OCA would be where I could learn all about traditional techniques, but it was not to be at that time. In the mid to late sixties, the OCA was undergoing an upheaval in terms of teaching, and I found the only solution was to leave. I then studied for a year with an artist trained in the Budapest academy. I learned much that year about oil painting, but later dropped oils in favor of acrylics. A whole new experience.
After considerable experimentation with an under and over technique, I finally settled on an impressionist tonal style to express the solace and beauty that I found in the Toronto Islands.
